Lash serums: separating the science from the hype

The single most effective category of lash serum is built on prostaglandin analogs — molecules originally developed as glaucoma medications, where a known side effect was longer, darker, fuller eyelashes. The most studied molecule is bimatoprost, sold as a prescription product called Latisse.

Many over-the-counter serums use related analogs (isopropyl cloprostenate, dechloro dihydroxy difluoro ethylcloprostenolamide — yes, that's a real ingredient name) that work similarly but aren't identical. They genuinely make lashes grow. They also carry the same risks the prescription version does: iris darkening (rare, usually permanent), eyelid skin darkening (sometimes reverses on discontinuation), and dry eye.

Peptide serums work by conditioning the lash itself and supporting the follicle without extending the growth phase as aggressively. They're slower, gentler, and don't carry the prostaglandin risks. They're also less dramatic. A peptide serum used consistently for 12 weeks will make your lashes look healthier and slightly thicker. It won't double their length.

For most people, this is the right starting point. You can always graduate to a prostaglandin analog later if you want more.

Redness or itching that doesn't resolve within a week. Eyelid darkening. Eye dryness or grittiness. Any change in iris color (very rare with topical OTC products, but possible). If any of these appear, stop the serum and give your skin two weeks before deciding what next.
